South Florida Mother/Son Authors Win Prestigious INDIEFAB Book of the Year Finalist Award for I WANT CAKE!
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL., March 12, 2016 — Two South Florida residents – Jo Ann Kairys of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Daniel Kairys, MD, of Miramar, FL – are pleased to announce that their second children’s picture book, I WANT CAKE! has been recognized as an INDIEFAB Book of the Year Finalist in the 18th annual Foreword Reviews’ Book of the Year Awards.
Kairys writes with her son Daniel, a general surgeon in Belle Glade. Their first children’s book, SUNBELIEVABLE, was honored with the “best” in the Storytelling and Illustration categories from Mom’s Choice Awards, Indie Excellence Book Awards, Florida Publishers Association, Purple Dragonfly Book Awards and the Royal Dragonfly Book Awards. “Being an INDIEFAB Book of the Year finalist for I Want Cake! is a tremendous honor and we are thrilled,” both Kairys said.
“I WANT CAKE! is entirely different from most children’s books, with its spectacular illustrations and deliciously entertaining story,” says Foreword Reviews. The book features three siblings venturing into their multicultural neighborhood to find cake for breakfast. Readers of all ages will get a laugh at the adults’ suggestions about breakfast food, such as snails and mushrooms, books, or a bike tire instead of cake.
“As a writer and illustrator, I’m keenly aware of the lack of diversity in children’s literature, an important issue discussed by today’s parents, teachers and librarians. Even though America’s racial and ethnic minorities now make up about half of the under-5 age group, only 1 in 10 kids’ books published in the United States for the past 25 years includes children of color,” said Kairys.
“Because the children are part of my bi-racial nuclear family, I didn’t give much thought to their racial identity. I focused instead on creating a fun story with my son (their dad) that could be enjoyed by all children and families. I am pleased that I WANT CAKE! has achieved that goal while contributing to the need for more diverse books.”

Each year, Foreword Reviews shines a light on a select group of indie publishers, university presses, and self-published authors whose work stands out from the crowd. In the next three months, a panel of more than 100 volunteer librarians and booksellers will determine the winners in 63 categories based on their experience with readers and patrons.
Victoria Sutherland, publisher of Foreword Reviews, said the 2015 INDIEFAB finalist selection process is as inspiring as it is rigorous. “The strength of this list of finalists is further proof that small, independent publishers are taking their rightful place as the new driving force of the entire publishing industry,” Sutherland said.
