I’m participating in NaBloPoMo. I love writing and illustrating for young children because…
When I hear children immersed in their own storytelling, I’m riveted by their imagination and curiosity. Their sense of wonder, unbounded, catapults them into a magical realm. What a delight to stand back and listen to their playful dialogue.
As an author, I’m thinking, “What a beautiful story . . . ” I try to capture the essence of it while envisioning the delicate balance between potential text and illustration. That’s where the writing challenge begins, like storyboarding in my head. Images and words leap all over the place, much as the children engage in non-scripted, spontaneous language.
Once I have a coherent story line, I start taking photos of the children. I really like blending reality and fantasy, so my illustration style combines real kids with landscapes created digitally on Photoshop. This melding of virtual/digital and actual/original photos produces vivid images that seem to pop of the page. At least, I hope so.
Here’s an example. The girls are swinging from a blue moon and red sun. They were imagining what it would feel like to play in the sky, so I created this digital collage with that idea.
