Welcome to Bloggers Read Across the Globe (BRAG) — Promoting Children’s Reading and Literacy!
Children’s Literacy Headline: Research has continually shown that when adults read to children, discussing story content, asking open-ended questions about story events, explaining the meaning of words, and pointing out features of print, they promote increased language development, comprehension of story content, knowledge of story structure, and a better understanding of language– all of which lead to literacy success. (The Science of Early Childhood Development: Closing the Gap Between What We Know and What We Do. Cambridge, MA.)
Today, as part of the BRAG tour, I’m thrilled to share a wonderfully heartfelt article by Kelly Devine at kidtory.
Says Kelly, “You can follow Our Own Road to Literacy at kidtory. With an international family, tots in tow and lots and lots of books! As a mommy I want to raise a few tykes who love to read! I am not exactly sure how our adventure is going to turn out because I do not have a road map and the adventure is just kind of getting started. The ‘wired world’ we live in is ever changing and influencing my family’s approach to literacy but this is all part of the adventure and sharing our experiences is exciting!”
“At kidtory we share favorite books, authors and illustrators that keep my little peanuts attention. I have some tried and tested Apps (that my oldest is growing quite fond of; new technology is like a duck to water for her) that keep them busy when I need it most and online safety tips and concerns brought to you by our team (meaning my husband the online marketing guru).”
Kelly lives in Toronto with her husband and two young children. She is a strong advocate for promoting literacy and the extreme value of the public library. She enjoys great food and a good book and of course her humble international family life!
Please head on over to kidtory for insights about literacy from Kelly!
